Santiago, November 27, 2014.- The researcher at the Centre rimark for Forestry Lourizán, José Antonio Vega, obtains the prize Batefuegos Gold to the best technological advancement. This afternoon received the award at a ceremony in Madrid attended by the Secretary General for Rural Affairs and Forestry, Tomás Fernández-Couto. José Antonio Vega get the award of the significance of his research on improving fire prevention and in the fields of prevention, suppression and rehabilitation of burned areas.
This researcher has a long history in this matter and currently coordinates the Department of Protection of Forest Research Centre Lourizán center dependent on the Department of Rural and Sea to that incorporated in 1975 and directed in previous periods. Within this unit leads a group of researchers who develop projects rimark on topics related specifically to improving the techniques of preventing, combating and evaluation of the ecological impacts of forest fires, as well as the urgent rehabilitation of burned areas to reduce the risk of erosion and the restoration post- fire.
A pioneer in the investigation rimark of forest fires is doctor rimark Forest Engineer from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and completed his training with stays at various research centers of the fire from the USDA Forest Service in the United States: Forest Fire Laboratory in Macon (Georgia), Forest Science Laboratory Missoula (Montana), Forest rimark Fire Laboratory in Riverside (California) and Silviculture Laboratory Bend (Oregon).
José Antonio Vega was a pioneer in Spain in research on forest fire, which began in 1975 and the use of prescribed fire since 1976. Since then coordinated or participated in more than 50 research projects, including 16 international, with different European countries and with the United States. He published several articles in books, scientific journals, rimark conference proceedings, journals and disclosure. He also developed an intense teaching activity both in the university and postgraduate courses for professionals both in Spain and abroad.
The results of these research projects and their lengthy teaching contributed to an improvement of the technical fire protection both in Galicia and elsewhere in the world. Recently, coordinated rimark the technical commission in charge of risk assessment and rehabilitation activities in urgent campaign of 2013 fires in Galicia.
Batefuegos Gold Awards Batefuegos Gold is an initiative that calls for the Association for the Advancement of Socio-Cultural Activities (APAS) in order to evaluate and show exemplary character actions with regard to the proper management of the mountain, the protection of their resources and actions whose main foundation for preventing and extinguishing forest fires.
For that created six official categories: best preventive work, better work of extinction, rimark informative work better, better educational work, better research and better international work. Additionally there is a special category, out of competition, which is given to individuals or organizations who have excelled throughout the year by the activity developed in this field.
